OT 35 The Golden Calf

Story  Notes

  • With Moses gone, the people asked Aaron to make a god. He made a CALF using their gold earrings.
  • The people said, "Here is the god who saved us from Egypt!" They celebrated WILDLY in front of it.
  • God told Moses what his people had done. "I'll DESTROY them and start over with you," God said.
  • Moses reminded God of his PROMISES to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God didn't destroy the people.
  • Moses came down. He BURNED their god, smashed it into powder, and made the people drink it.
  • Aaron LIED about what happened. He said, "I threw the gold in the fire and out popped this calf!"
  • Moses asked God to FORGIVE his people. He offered to be punished in their place.
  • God punished the people with a PLAGUE because they worshiped the golden calf Aaron made.

 

Important Idea

Jesus is our man in the MIDDLE, who died in our place.

 

Memory Verse

1 Timothy 2:5, ESV – For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus...

  • One – hold up one index finger in front of you 
  • God – point up
  • One – hold up one index finger in front of you
  • Mediator – hold up your left index finger slightly off to your left, then your right index finger slightly off to your right, then move your head forward in between the fingers 
  • God and men – point up, then point down
  • Christ Jesus – form a cross with your arms

  • What did God send to punish the people for their sin? // A plague
