Story  Notes

  • God led his people to the Red Sea with a pillar of CLOUD by day and a pillar of fire by night.
  • God told Moses, "Pharaoh will chase after you. When he does, everyone will KNOW I am the Lord."
  • Pharaoh changed his mind. He sent his army to CHASE after the Israelites.
  • Trapped between the sea and the army, the Israelites asked, "Did you bring us out here to DIE?"
  • Moses said, "Be still. God will FIGHT for you." God told him to hold his staff over the sea.
  • God sent a wind to SPLIT the sea. The people walked across on dry land between walls of water.
  • The Egyptians chased after the Israelites. God made the soldiers PANIC and their chariots wheels jam.
  • Moses reached out his staff. God brought the waters DOWN on the entire Egyptian army.

Important Idea

The Lord God is a MIGHTY Savior. 


Memory Verse

Exodus 15:11, ESV – Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?

  • Who – hold out your hands and shrug
  • Lord – point up
  • gods – do “air quotes” because the “gods” aren’t really God
  • Majestic – hold your hands above your head, then bow low to the round
  • Awesome in deeds – two thumbs up
  • Wonders – put your hands on our cheeks, drop your jaw, and look up in wonder

Review Questions

  • How did God show the Israelites where to go? // He led them with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night
  • What did God say Pharaoh would do? // Pharaoh would change his mind
  • When the Israelites left, what did Pharaoh do? // Sent his army to chase after them
  • Where did God lead the Israelites to? // The Red Sea
  • When they saw the army coming, what did the Israelites say? // Did you bring us here to die in the desert?
  • What did Moses say to the people when they were afraid? // Be still. God will fight for you.
  • What did God do when Moses held out his staff? // God sent a wind to part the waters in two
  • What was it like for the Israelites as they walked across the Red Sea? // Walls of water on each side, the ground was dry
  • As the Egyptians chased the Israelites, how did God slow them down? // Made them panic, made their chariot wheels jam
  • When Moses held up his staff again, what happened to the waters and the Egyptians? // The water came down; all the soldiers died
